Lake Perris Report

Postby Curtis Newkirk » Thu May 25, 2006 8:58 pm

Well, here we are driving down I-15 and coming up on St. George. I am with Geddo and Austin, Shane and Guy Barrious, and Bennett. We are all excited and looking forward to a fun and fast weekend of racing.

I will try to give some reports as we go. Friday Shane and Lee will be taking Guy and Austin to the night race. Bennett will do practice and then we will head to the room for a good nights sleep. The boys will be racing in two races each both Saturday and Sunday.

More later and keep these guys in your thoughts. This is going to be a tough national, but they are all really pumped!

We stayed at the South Coast Casino last night. This is the place that they will beholding the famous 'TBA' nationals in mid-july. All I have to say is AWESOME! Shane and I were able to sneak into the equestrian center last night and it was very nice and very well lit. This will be the absolute BEST indoor facility for BMX that I have been to. If you have not made your reservations go to www.southcoastcasino.com - make sure to use the ABA code for a discount.

Okay, on to Lake Perris!!

Curtis,

too bad I'm leaving CA in a couple hours, it would have been nice to maybe hook up for dinner or something.

Good luck this weekend! Travel safe and ride hard! :)

Sorry for the late report. It was a long and busy weekend and I have not been on the internet until now. The race was a little smaller than some were anticipating. A few were saying it woulf top Phoenix's 300 motos, but it fell short at 250 on Saturday. A few shorter on Sunday.

The track was a tough one. It was very busy with lippy jumps and deep transitions. It had this wierd first obstacle that was a kind of non-flowing double that came up pretty quick out of the gate. Then there was a step-up-ish double into the first turn. The front straight was pretty short and led into a large Daytona style turn one. The second straight was super long and went big double, big double, big double, big triple, then turn two. From there on out the third and fourth straights were pretty busy, but well-flowing rhythm sections.

The dust. Wow - just be glad we have all of that nice pavement at Rad. The duststorms on Saturday were pretty bad. Ithink everyone left feeling like they had every inch of their being permeated by dust. Sunday was a bit better, but facilities like this make one really appreciate what we have at Rad.

Before I go into results, let me just say a couple of things: first off, I will miss people and results - sorry. We will have to wait for the ABA to post the results to see the real results. Second: keep in mind that this track had a HUGE local advantage because it was tough. They also held a very large clinic here the week before that many people within a 400 mile radius attended.

On Saturday the Utah main-makers were: Ariel, TP, Robbie on cruiser, Spence, Travis, Karli Healey, and Savannah Foster. TP puled a win and rode just incredible doin' it all day. Aire got a third or fourth. She rode her heart out, but tangled and crashed in the (I think) last main. I am not sure of everyone elses placings, but trust me, making a main at this race is a big deal. Bennet made semis in both 7-8 Open and 7X by qualifying first round. He rode the semis pretty flat because I think he was expecting a cakewalk to the main. This mistake caused him to miss both Saturday mains which he had to watch from the sidelines. He would not make any cakewalk assumptions again.

Sunday the main makers were: Ariel, TP, Robbie in both class and cruiser, Spence, Travis on class and cruiser, Karli, maybe Savannah, and Bennett in class. Bennett did not race open, but raced 9 & under cruiser instead. Guy Barrious made his 11X semi and clame close to a main - good job guy! Austin Gedings and Levi Foster also rode well, but did not quite make it out of the motos. AIRE WON! She did an awesome job and took it home. TP - not too sure. He looked really good early, but a crash in the mains hurt him. I think he ended up 3rd or 4th on the day.

The race of the day goes to Travis Healey and Braydon Bringhurst. Trav was running 1-2 with Smokin' Joe Sowers and they locked up a bit in turn three. Braydon swung underneath and sprinted for the win with Trav taking 2nd. Both Braydon and Trav ride for BMX HEX.

Bennett learned from his mistakes, but draw lane 8 in the semi. He charged out HARD and moved over with another kid and took a second to tranfer to the main. In the main he drew lane 2. The gate dropped and he pulled the entire class down the front straight. I had him geared low though and two kids snuck up to him in the first turn. They were pretty much even, then, out of nowhere, T-Rex Tyler Fuller blasts from high in turn one and BOOSTS THE DOUBLE (this was a big double). To pass the three leaders. The race was still very tight and this lead group of four bar-banged all the rest of the way around the track. They looked like a pack of AA's in turns two and three with Bennett battling for the three spot. He charged down the last straight and nearly got it, but took fourth by inches. It was the very best kids race I have seen and the top four absolutely shelled the other four (who were also travelling in a pack). The group was 20 strong on Sunday and this was the hardest earned 4th I have seen him take.

After the races we left the track and went to Geddo's moms motor home to shower and eat a good home-cooked meal before hittting the road home. We left about 8PM PST and pulled up to my house just before 6 this morning. I am beat.

I want to send a special thanks to Geddo, Austin, Shane, and Guy for making the trip so fun and splitting the ride. Geddos mom for the great food and company, BMX HEX's Kim and Dan for being who they are all all that comes with it, Halvey and Staats for hauling the bikes, Steve and Syd, the Healeys, Fosters, and eveyoone who made this trip one to remember.

Now, quit reading and book your room to Vegas!

Sounds like you guys had fun I wish I could've been there, maybe next time. Congrats to all the Utah riders who went there and made their main it sounds like it must've been very hard to do that. Well my dad already booked us a hotel room at the South Coast Casino in Vegas practically my whole family will be going. Look forward to seing everyone there.

Oops - I KNEW I would forget someone! The Campbells! Skylar rode great this weekend. He made semi's on Sunday and was right on the bubble to make the main. This kid is gonna be something else in the near future.

Now that I am thinking of it, all of the Utah riders rode better on Sunday. I think the only exception was TP, but its hard to come back from a crash in a low-points race. I think everyone rode well on Sunday because they were getting more used to the track.

What a great weekend. We had so much fun and it was a great learning experience for Skylar. He won the 11x race on Friday night and that set the tone for the weekend. He qualified to the semi main on Saturday and pulled a good rack to make a main, a miss que at the gate caused him to come unclipped and finish 6th. Sunday he qaulified to semi's in the first round taking second in the first moto and giving Nathan Padilla (NAG 6) all he could handle down the last straight. He again pulled a great rack for a possible main but suffered a similar fate in the gate and finished 5th...aaaah if only there were 50 more feet on that track. All in all it was great - Skylar learned a lot and the Utard crew was there to represent. Special thanks to Steve Spencer for giving us a place to plant it while we were there.

Rope - thanks for posting. I am really surprised it took he ABA four days to get the results up. In Roseville they were posting the results that evening.

No Taco's for me.

Yes, I agree I have no idea how Mitch saved that last nite, he never ceases to amaze me.

Definitely the ABA was slacking this time, however our riders weren't.
