Beau Mahaffey in 1988. He told me that a photographer from a local newspaper was taking pics of some skaters jumping over the hood of this VW. Well he asked if he could hit it up & they said sure. He moved the kicker so he would go over the car & as you can see, he skyed it. He said that he landed on some grass & slammed his face into the crossbar, giving him a busted mouth.
Next time you see him in Rock Springs, tell him how cool this picture is.

Well, they are ahead of you. Last time I checked they were still making Slingshot MTB's, road, and cyclocross bikes. Check out: http://www.slingshotbikes.com/
...but to answer your questions, they did not help out gates. Hard work and mucho practice is what helps out gates.
As far as the sidehack racing. They still do this from time to time. The next BIG sidehack race will be in Roseville at the US Nationals in a week and a half.

I have been slacking on this thread but I came across these pics over at Vintage BMX.com that just had to be shown here.
These are awesome early-mid 1970's BMX pictures that came outta So. California. Early side-hack & early race bikes. See the banana seats on some of them? My very first race was on a Huffy with a banana seat.
I want to thank a guy by the name of Mel Stoutsenberger who all these pictures belong to & gave me permission to post right here on our site! Thanks you!!

love these pic's, Bruce. Brings back allot of memories of the old bikes we used to jump at "the river" --- our old jumping spot by my house.
There were such a variety of stuff that we all used....motobikes....stingrays in various garb.......early motomags......kids would be cruising around with choppers. Remember those? You'd take an extra set of forks and weld them onto the end of your forks to make them really long, sometimes stick a 16" wheel on the front, big ol' handlebars and a sissy bar if you were lucky. lol Not very moto.....but my point is how there was such a variety of stuff that we'd all be riding on. Of course, I lived on the west side, so all of our stuff was like 10 years old, bikes put together from stuff people threw away. lol We could come up with all kinds of crazy stuff.
anyway...love the pics......keep'em komin'

OH yeah- Stoutsenberger....he's my old cousin....from the California side of the family. Us Utah Stoutsenbergers stopped short- here in Utah. We didn't go on to California for the gold rush. We are a lazy bunch. So lazy we just stopped using the last part of our name. Just as we were too lazy to continue on to California! Besides religious asylum seemed like a good enough reason to stick around!
Stout n' Burger was the original name- we were named after the Irish Beer -Stout, and we'd wash our beer down with a burger!
JS and a whole pile of BS!
P.S. Cool pics!
