I'm just hanging on by a thread, so if you'll throw a few powerpoints my way to get me up to speed :D

Well, I'm back to square one. I missed the fact that my laptop does not have a firewire port, so it looks like I'll be bringing out my laptop and desktop like originally planned. It may not be a bad thing, I'll see if I can wrap it all up in my gear bag (since I won't be racing) and I should be able to make it work.

If this all goes well, maybe I can ask for a new (used) desktop that I can use for race events for Xmas :D

At this point, I'm thinking I won't need it. I'd love to use it, but I can't find the program I need to record for Vista.

i have a 6-pin (the bigger flavor) Firewire PCMCIA card you can use (maybe have). will that help out any?

If it's a PCMCIA firewire card, then I don't think it will work as I won't be able to also use my wireless internet PCMCIA card.

I did some quick testing at home with my desktop and it worked great, so I think I'm just going to pack up the essentials and use that this weekend. I got some encouraging news today concerning webcasting/video recording and the related equipment so hopefully after this weekend, that issue will be solved.

If anyone has experience with any webcasting/video production equipment, and can offer suggestions, please let me know. I have some knowledge of the basics, but I need to learn more about the more "professional" side of things.

However, I did buy a book, so hopefully I can get a better grasp on this field.

That's the card I have--prolly won't work for you.

I've played with some web/media casting but it's been a while... Messed with streaming audio via Windows Media Services (or whatever it was called in Server 2000). Played with Shoutcast once or twice, years ago. Messed with Real Media's Helix (I think) on Linux. Never really did anything serious with it. When I worked for a radio group I did some research but that's been over 8 years ago and we ended up going with a service rather than trying to build it ourselves.

I think I'm just really trying to brag, if that's anything worth trying to brag about. But it could also be that it was rather easy--for what I did, anyway--and that's the real point.

I think I'm going to try to put a timer on my webcam and watch my computer watching itself... i don't have a fish tank/coffee pot/nor anything interesting to watch... but I've not done that yet.

have i taken this off topic enough?

no, really, I DON'T know why they call me ADD boy at work, honest!

Yeah, looks like it unfortunately. I need that slot for the wireless card. Thanks for the offer!

I think this is going to be a good weekend to get me started to providing a high quality webcast, along with recording video. I think my first step is to find a good streaming server host to use for the webcast. The Stickam.com site I use now is good for basic webcasts from home, but it really doesn't lend itself well to sports webcasting. If I want to do it right, I think using a real streaming server (like the ABA and BMXTVDirect used) will be the way to go. I just need to figure out the financials. If I get on it, I might be able to test something this weekend.

I will say the one thing I'll miss this weekend was the elevated position I had at the Davis County facility. That was a great spot to video the entire track, without major worries of "other" sounds getting onto the video.
